For better or for worse, we are living in a society which is based physically on Western science & technology. This has inescapable consequences for the scientist. Initially he was an accidental force in the unfolding of human destiny. This he can no longer be. A Neils Bohr has said, scientists must become conscious of the fact that they are not merely observers, but also actors on the stage of life. The everyday world is crowding upon us ; science is not enough. Chemistry is not enough. Scientists must live and even chemists must eat. Modern societies are preoccupied with efforts to improve their material conditions and they are doing this under such intense competition that the less efficient will either fall behind or go to the wall. The means which are used depend on the application of scientific knowledge. Only scientists have the necessary training for establishing and using the technlogies required to exploit recent major discoveries and those likely to arise in the future. It is clear that they will be brought more and more into technology, and thus into industry, the vehicle by which mankind exploits science for his own ends. It is certain that modern society will be forced to deploy its scientists in a manner conductive to fulfilling its objectives. Moreover, since the scientist is a part of society, he will be impelled to respond to the needs of the times and assume a wider role.

Even the young ones can fly hundreds of nautical miles without losing their way. How to they do it? God has given them a tremendous sense of direction. possible they have a compass of sorts in their brain. Every year, we can see birds from north India fly to the south. In India we have several bird sanctuaries where birds from both parts of the globe come, spend a few months and return when the climatic conditions in their homeland are more favourable. When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in the southern hemisphere. The birds which cannot stand the cold climate fly to the warmer regions. They are called migratory birds. Motivators are thing which an individual to perform. Whilw motivations reflect wants, motivators are the identified rewards, or incentives, that sharpen the drive to satisfy these wants. They are also the means by which conflicting needs may be reconciled or one need heightened so that it will be given priority over one another. Motivation refer to the drive and effort to satisfy a want or goal. A motivator then , is something that influences an individuals behaviour. It makes a difference in what a person will do. Obviously, in any organized enterprise, manager must be concerned about motivators and also inventive in their use. People can often satisfy their wants a variety of ways.A person can, for example, satisfy a desire for affiliation by being active ina social club rather that in business, meet economic need by performing a job just well enough to get by, or satisfy status needs by spending time working for a political party. What a manager must do, of course, is use those motivators which will lead people to perform effectively for the enterprise that employs them no manager can expect to hire the whole person, since people always have desires and drives outside the enterprise. But if a company or any other kind of eneterprise is to be efficient and successful, enough of every person’s drives must be stimulated and satisfied to ensure effective performance.

Clean drinking water and basic sanitation are necessary to prevent communicable diseases and to maintain a healthy life. For many of the world’s poorest people, one of the greatest environmental threats to health remains the continued use of polluted water. In 2002 the United Nations estimated that at least 1.1 billion people lacked access to safe drinking water and 2.4 billion do not have adequate sanitation. These deficiencies result in hundreds of millions of cases of water related illness and more than5 million deaths every year. As population grow, more people move into cities and agriculture and industry compete for increasingly source water supplies, water shortage are expected to become even worse. By 2025, two thirds of the world’s people will be living in more than 10% of renewable freshwater resources. One of the highest priorities announced at the U.N. World summit in Johannesberg in 2002, is to reduce by one-half the proportion of people without reliable access of clean-water and improved sanitation.

Make a precis of the following passage and give a suitable title to it.
As we are in the twenty-first century, we are witnessing the emergence of a new kind of social scientist – the non verbalist. Just as the bird watcher delights in watching birds and their behavior, so the non-verbalist delights in watching the non-verbal cues and signals of human beings. He watches them at social functions, at beaches, on television, at the office or anywhere that people interact. He is a student of behaviour who wants to learn about the actions of his fellow humans so that he may ultimately learn more about himself and how he can improve his relationship with others.
It seems almost incredible that, over the million or more years of man’s evolution, the non-verbal aspects of communication have been actively studied on any scale only since the 1960s and that the public has become aware of their existence only since Julius Fast published a book about body language in 1970. This was a summary of the workdone by behavioural scientists on non-verbal communication up until that time and even today, most people are still ignorant of the existence of body language, let alone its importance in their lives.
Charlie Chaplin and many other silent movie actors were pioneers of non-verbal communication skills; they were the only means of communication skills; they were the only means of communication available on the screen. Each actor was classed as good or bad by the extent to which he could use gestures and other bdy signals to communicate effectively. When talking films became popular and less emphasis was placed on the non-verbal aspects of acting, many silent movie actors faded into obscurity and those with good verbal skills prevailed.
