1. (a)
List and explain various physical and mechanical properties of materials used for construction?

Discuss characteristics of a building stone. Give values of compressive strength of any three building stone.

Explain the principle of making mortar and concrete pointing out the influence of size of aggregates and water-cement ratio on the proportioning and strength of mortars and concrete.
3. (a) Define orientation of a building. explain the various aspects of orientation of building?

Name the different type of foundations you recommend under different situations and soils. Explain them brief and give neat sketch?
4. (a) State the general principles to be observed in brick masonary construction. Sketch
    (i) Ashlar
    (ii) Rubber masonary in elevation
  (b) What is dampness? What are its ill effects? Explain with sketches how damp proofing is done in building?
5. (a)
The distance between two station was 1200 m when measured with a 20 m chain. The same distance when measured with 30 m chain was found to be 1195 m. If the 20 m chain was 0.05 m too long, what was the error in the 30 m chain?
   
The sides of a triangle are 156, 103 and 257 m respectively. Examine whether the triangle is well conditioned.
  (b)
Name the equipmrnt required for compass survey. Do not describe the equipment but give nest free hand sketch. Give number required for each equipment.

The following staff readings were taken in succession with a level. The instrument was shifted after the fourth and seventh readings. Either the data in a page of level book by (1) The plane of communication method (2) Rise and Fall Method. The first readings was taken on a bench mark of reduced level 68.235 m :
  1.735, 1.625, 1.580, 1.250, 1.115, 2.010, 1.325, 1.055, 1.095, 0.955

  (viii) Energy efficiency in planning of building
