For better or for worse, we are living in a society which is based physically on Western science & technology. This has inescapable consequences for the scientist. Initially he was an accidental force in the unfolding of human destiny. This he can no longer be. A Neils Bohr has said, scientists must become conscious of the fact that they are not merely observers, but also actors on the stage of life. The everyday world is crowding upon us ; science is not enough. Chemistry is not enough. Scientists must live and even chemists must eat. Modern societies are preoccupied with efforts to improve their material conditions and they are doing this under such intense competition that the less efficient will either fall behind or go to the wall. The means which are used depend on the application of scientific knowledge. Only scientists have the necessary training for establishing and using the technlogies required to exploit recent major discoveries and those likely to arise in the future. It is clear that they will be brought more and more into technology, and thus into industry, the vehicle by which mankind exploits science for his own ends. It is certain that modern society will be forced to deploy its scientists in a manner conductive to fulfilling its objectives. Moreover, since the scientist is a part of society, he will be impelled to respond to the needs of the times and assume a wider role.

Even the young ones can fly hundreds of nautical miles without losing their way. How to they do it? God has given them a tremendous sense of direction. possible they have a compass of sorts in their brain. Every year, we can see birds from north India fly to the south. In India we have several bird sanctuaries where birds from both parts of the globe come, spend a few months and return when the climatic conditions in their homeland are more favourable. When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in the southern hemisphere. The birds which cannot stand the cold climate fly to the warmer regions. They are called migratory birds. They can fly non-stop up to twenty hours or so in one stretch and cover a few hundred miles in one stop. The migratory birds always fly in groups.
