Initially he was an accidental force in the unfolding of human destiny. This he can no longer be. A Neils Bohr has said, scientists must become conscious of the fact that they are not merely observers, but also actors on the stage of life. The everyday world is crowding upon us ; science is not enough. Chemistry is not enough. Scientists must live and even chemists must eat. Modern societies are preoccupied with efforts to improve their material conditions and they are doing this under such intense competition that the less efficient will either fall behind or go to the wall. The means which are used depend on the application of scientific knowledge. Only scientists have the necessary training for establishing and using the technlogies required to exploit recent major discoveries and those likely to arise in the future. It is clear that they will be brought more and more into technology, and thus into industry, the vehicle by which mankind exploits science for his own ends. It is certain that modern society will be forced to deploy its scientists in a manner conductive to fulfilling its objectives. Moreover, since the scientist is a part of society, he will be impelled to respond to the needs of the times and assume a wider role.

As we are in the twenty-first century, we are witnessing the emergence of a new kind of social scientist – the non verbalist. Just as the bird watcher delights in watching birds and their behavior, so the non-verbalist delights in watching the non-verbal cues and signals of human beings. He watches them at social functions, at beaches, on television, at the office or anywhere that people interact. He is a student of behaviour who wants to learn about the actions of his fellow humans so that he may ultimately learn more about himself and how he can improve his relationship with others.
It seems almost incredible that, over the million or more years of man’s evolution, the non-verbal aspects of communication have been actively studied on any scale only since the 1960s and that the public has become aware of their existence only since Julius Fast published a book about body language in 1970. This was a summary of the workdone by behavioural scientists on non-verbal communication up until that time and even today, most people are still ignorant of the existence of body language, let alone its importance in their lives.
Charlie Chaplin and many other silent movie actors were pioneers of non-verbal communication skills; they were the only means of communication skills; they were the only means of communication available on the screen. Each actor was classed as good or bad by the extent to which he could use gestures and other bdy signals to communicate effectively. When talking films became popular and less emphasis was placed on the non-verbal aspects of acting, many silent movie actors faded into obscurity and those with good verbal skills prevailed.

Man does not communicate through words alone, or only through writing, speaking and listening. There is another aspect of communication the non-verbal aspect. Depending on the situation we have to make a conscious effort in the use of words. the non-verbal part of communication on the other hand, is less deliberate. As compared to verbal communication it is very much subtle and instructive. However it forms the larger part of the overall communication activity. By nodding our head, blinking our eyes, waving our hands, shrugging our shoulders we send out signals. Just as language uses sets of symbols to convey meaning, our body consciously as well as unconsciously carries messages, attitudes, status, relationships, moods, warmth, indifference and so on. We have, however to infer these menaings from body symbols. we look for these symbols in the face & eyes, gestures, posture and physical appearance each of which has its own function.
