India Has Highest Number Of Gmail Users

India has the highest number of Gmail users by quite a big margin as compared to other countries.
According to data from the Reston, Virginia-based digital marketing intelligence firm Comscore, Gmail’s market penetration in India stands at 62%, the highest in the world, far above the second ranked Brazil, which is at 41%. The corresponding figure for the US is 29%.

Andrew Lipsman, Comscore’s vice-pesident for Industry Analysis, said, “Penetration is defined as the percentage of total home and work Internet users who engage in a particular behaviour. I am not surprised that India is the leader for Gmail penetration given the market’s general affinity for Google-branded products and services.”

Gmail is number one webmail provider in India and is at number two in the US. According to Lipsman, “Global Gmail usage is up 32% in the past year. It is up 24% in the US, 91% in Brazil and 16% in India.”

According to Comscore, while the US accounted for nearly 5.3 million of Google+’s audience since its late June launch, India is ranked a “strong” second with about 2.8 million visitors.

It’s also indicative of how the Indian market is evolving. In mid-2010, the social networking platform with the largest user base in India was Orkut, with 19.7 million.

At that time, Facebook trailed Orkut by over one million users. By the end of June this year, Facebook’s usage had jumped to 34.5 million with Orkut dropping to 13.4 million, going by Comscore statistics.

Orkut, of course, is the original Google social media platform, predating even the failed Google Buzz network. Google did not comment on its plans for Google+ in India.

However, a spokesperson said, “We’re committed to making the web more people-centric, and we’ve been gradually giving people new ways to share things and interact within our products.”

Facebook Launches “Facebook For Every Phone” Application

Facebook launched a new application called “Facebook for Every Phone” that brings a smartphone like experience on 2500+ java-enabled mobile devices worldwide including facebook’s most popular features like News feed, Inbox and Photos. It also includes the ability to upload photos to Facebook and find friends from the phonebook.

The app is free to use for 90 days on mobile operators that have partnered with Facebook, after which, standard data charges will apply. Facebook has partnered with 20 mobile carriers in 14 countries to offer this time-limited free access.

Facebook Launches Video Chat With Skype

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and CEO, made the announcement and revealed video chat feature that will be provided by Skype during a press conference at the company’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters on Wednesday.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has hit a record 750 million users. The new service, rolling out from Wednesday, could be a huge boost for Skype, which currently has about 145 million regular users.

Few months ago, Facebook developers started working with Skype to bring video calling to Facebook. They built it right into chat, so all your conversations start from the same place.

By incorporating free video chat directly into its service, Facebook will give its members another reason to use the site more often and for longer periods of time, said Gartner analyst Ray Valdes.

Facebook has introduced a new ‘call’ button on the site, which people can click on in order to activate the service. The new video call experience is very similar to Skype’s original offering.

Zuckerberg also announced a new group chat feature. More than half of Facebook’s 750 million users have created ‘groups’ of friends. With the new release people can use instant messenger to talk to multiple friends at the same time.

Facebook’s Skype service, initially limited to one-to-one video chat, will be free. Financial details of the deal, if any, were not disclosed.

Additionally the company has redesigned its chat tool – making a bigger sidebar for people to see who is online with more ease.

The partnership comes as competition heats up in the Internet market, with Facebook and Google, as well as fast-growing companies such as Groupon and Twitter, vying for billions of dollars in online advertising revenue.

Facebook Blocks Friend Exporter Google Chrome Extension For Google+

Facebook Friend Exporter, Chrome extension that lets you grab all the information about your Facebook friends so you can import them elsewhere has been in the Chrome Web Store since last year. It became popular just a few weeks ago and Facebook has decided to block it.

In response, the developer has posted the following message on the extension’s page:

“Facebook is trying so hard to not allow you to export your friends. They started to remove emails of your friends from your profile by today July 5th 2011. It will no longer work for many people. New version with a different design is currently deploying. You might have to do exports daily. It uses a different approach, and I will maintain this version. Just bear with me”

The Facebook Friend Exporter is a tool for Google+ that expedites the process of exporting your Facebook contacts, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, websites, addresses and birthdays. All of the contact information can be saved as a CSV file or imported into a folder labeled “Imported from Facebook” in your Gmail address book which is the basis for all your conections on Google+.

According to website’s terms, you can clearly see that Facebook Friend Exporter technically violates FB’s Terms of Service, which states the following:

“You will not collect users content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without our permission”.

Twitter Revamps Homepage Like Facebook

Twitter redesign homepage to give first time users better look of what the micro blogging and social-networking site is. The new twitter homepage is a showcase of celebrities and other public figures with Twitter accounts, as well as a list of hot trends that scrolls across the home page.

Doug Bowman, the company’s creative director, in an official blog announcement on Tuesday wrote, “The redesign’s goal is to convey the message that Twitter is a network where information is exchanged and consumed at a rapid clip every second of the day”

“With so much being shared, we know that there’s something of value for everyone. People who internalize the value of Twitter understand the power of this simple medium. But it hasn’t been easy to make that value transparent or obvious for curious folks coming to Twitter for the first time,” Bowman wrote.

Analysts believe that the combined number of users in the two websites will reach 40 million which will be able to compete with current 50 million Facebook users.

Google bought “slide” this month, this site is designed applications & hopefully Google will use it to develop their new social networking site.

Osama Bin Laden Facebook Fan Page Disabled

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden’s Facebook Fan Page has been shut down. The account became active less than a month ago, but had already attracted nearly 1000 fans to watch posts linking to speeches and recordings of the Islamic extremist.

Osama had a page named “The leader of the Mujahideen, Osama bin Laden” and his address is given as “the mountains of the world”.

Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said “People often attempt to register fake accounts under the name of famous or infamous people, and we have a number of technical measures designed to prevent this behavior”

“Sometimes these fakes do get through, but there is no evidence to suggest that the account in question or the other dozens of people who have tried to present themselves as Osama Bin Laden have any relation to the terrorist. As is our standard practice, we have disabled the account,” he added.

Although it is unclear who started the page, Facebook says they doubt there is any direct link, and the page was likely put up by supporters in the Middle East.
