India Second Biggest User Base Of Google+

According to ComScore’s data, India is home to the second largest group of Google+ visitors of any country, accounting for 2.8 million, or 27%, of the world’s 20 million Google+ visitors.

With 5.3 million cumulative unique visitors to Google+, the US has the highest number of Google+ users.

In the US, 63% of Google+ visitors are male and more than half are between the ages of 18 and 34.

ComScore’s statistics shows, 867,000 people in the UK visited Google+ during the first 21 days of public existence, putting the country in third place behind the US and India. Canada (859,000 visitors), Germany (706,000 visitors), Brazil (622,000), Taiwan (515,000 visitors), France (498,000 visitors), Turkey (373,000 visitors) and Spain (365,000 visitors) made up the remaining top ten countries.

Lipsman noted that “these data are based on unique visitors (which is different than ‘users’ in that people who never sign up may visit Google+ pages) from home and work computers (which excludes usage via mobile devices).”

While Google+ has grown from strength to strength over the last couple of weeks, 750-million strong Facebook has been plagued by a never-ending onslaught of video scams and privacy misdemeanors.

Google+ is not without its own faults, however, and has recently come under fire for suspending the Google accounts of people who don’t use their real names within the social network.

India Has Highest Number Of Gmail Users

India has the highest number of Gmail users by quite a big margin as compared to other countries.
According to data from the Reston, Virginia-based digital marketing intelligence firm Comscore, Gmail’s market penetration in India stands at 62%, the highest in the world, far above the second ranked Brazil, which is at 41%. The corresponding figure for the US is 29%.

Andrew Lipsman, Comscore’s vice-pesident for Industry Analysis, said, “Penetration is defined as the percentage of total home and work Internet users who engage in a particular behaviour. I am not surprised that India is the leader for Gmail penetration given the market’s general affinity for Google-branded products and services.”

Gmail is number one webmail provider in India and is at number two in the US. According to Lipsman, “Global Gmail usage is up 32% in the past year. It is up 24% in the US, 91% in Brazil and 16% in India.”

According to Comscore, while the US accounted for nearly 5.3 million of Google+’s audience since its late June launch, India is ranked a “strong” second with about 2.8 million visitors.

It’s also indicative of how the Indian market is evolving. In mid-2010, the social networking platform with the largest user base in India was Orkut, with 19.7 million.

At that time, Facebook trailed Orkut by over one million users. By the end of June this year, Facebook’s usage had jumped to 34.5 million with Orkut dropping to 13.4 million, going by Comscore statistics.

Orkut, of course, is the original Google social media platform, predating even the failed Google Buzz network. Google did not comment on its plans for Google+ in India.

However, a spokesperson said, “We’re committed to making the web more people-centric, and we’ve been gradually giving people new ways to share things and interact within our products.”

Google Unveils Photovine, A New Photo-Sharing Social Network

The Search Giant Google started a new photo sharing service called Photovine, appears to let consumers take snaps from their phones and upload them in a stream in the same way tweets flow into Twitter. The service is not yet live. There is only the opportunity to request an invitation on Photovine’s website, with no indication of when the service will launch. One can also subscribe to other’s Photovine stream in order to see their snaps and also watch videos on the site.

Google has offered few details about the service and said little in response to a query.

“Photovine is a photo-sharing service built by a few folks at Slide,” the company said in a statement, referring to the social-media company it acquired in August. “It’s a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people and share your world with others.”

At this point it’s unclear whether this project is connected with Google’s recently launched social networking service Google+.

The Giant Google Social Network Google+ has already reached 10 million users in just two weeks. Google has not yet offered any official usage figures in relation to the limited field trial of its latest social networking platform.

Paul Allen, the founder of Ancestry.com, has estimated that Google+ is just a step away from hitting its 10-millionth member, if it hasn’t already, Telegraph reported.

Allen based his analysis on data about surname popularity. In a post on Google+, he wrote: “By using a sample of 100-200 surnames, I am able to accurately estimate the total percentage of the US population that has signed up for Google+. Then I use that number and a calculated ratio of US to non-US users to generate my worldwide estimates.”

Its an impressive work by Google, reaching 10 Million users so quickly. And we know that we still can’t access Google+ if we don’t get an invitation from another Google+ user.

Be Alert From Google+ Fake Invites

Google+, Google’s social networking service that you can join by invitation only is the latest target of the hackers for the first time in a scam which involves fake invites to the service.

Warning : For all those who are eager to get on to the Google’s new social networking site, Google+, here’s a warning for you. Don’t catch the invitations from just anywhere.

The fake invites are spreading through email, they look very similar to the actual invites to the service, down to the email address which seems to be coming from a Google+ member.

However, if you click on a link in the message (which we definitely do not recommend), you’ll directed to the online pharmacy websites set up to sell Viagra, Cialis, andLevitra.

In what may very well be the first major cybercriminal campaign exploiting the Google+ brand, spammers are sending out bogus Google+ invitations that in reality point to online pharmacies.

The messages look similar to the real emails that users may receive from friends who are already members of Google+.

However, clicking on the links will not take you to the new social network, but instead take you to a pharmacy website set up to sell the likes of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra to the unwary. In the case of the site shown below, they even have a special July 4th promotion – just in case you were hoping for additional fireworks on the night.

The next time you receive a Google+ invite, make sure you check what URL the link in the mail actually points to.

Facebook Blocks Friend Exporter Google Chrome Extension For Google+

Facebook Friend Exporter, Chrome extension that lets you grab all the information about your Facebook friends so you can import them elsewhere has been in the Chrome Web Store since last year. It became popular just a few weeks ago and Facebook has decided to block it.

In response, the developer has posted the following message on the extension’s page:

“Facebook is trying so hard to not allow you to export your friends. They started to remove emails of your friends from your profile by today July 5th 2011. It will no longer work for many people. New version with a different design is currently deploying. You might have to do exports daily. It uses a different approach, and I will maintain this version. Just bear with me”

The Facebook Friend Exporter is a tool for Google+ that expedites the process of exporting your Facebook contacts, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, websites, addresses and birthdays. All of the contact information can be saved as a CSV file or imported into a folder labeled “Imported from Facebook” in your Gmail address book which is the basis for all your conections on Google+.

According to website’s terms, you can clearly see that Facebook Friend Exporter technically violates FB’s Terms of Service, which states the following:

“You will not collect users content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without our permission”.

Yahoo To Launch Search Direct In India By Second Half Of 2011

After Google launched interactive prediction based search, Yahoo India just announced that it will launch its own version of Instant dubbed Search Direct, an enhanced search engine that promises results and site previews even as the search query is still being typed out in India by second half of this year.

Prabhakar Raghavan, chief scientist, senior vice-president and head of Yahoo Labs said “The new search engine predicts search results as fast as a person types – character by character, and presents those results dynamically, generating a fast, simple search experience that goes beyond mere blue links”

He said it (Search Direct) follows a theme … a theme that the company has been e pursuing ever since they forged a search alliance with Microsoft.

“The idea is to provide the user not with links but with answers. We expect Search Direct, a combination of completing what you were trying to type and fulfill your vertical-search intents including entertainment and shopping, which we launching in the US recently. We will be doing that in India in a few months from now,” he said.

Yahoo has already launched the beta version of Search Direct in the US last week, which was seen as similar to Google’s instant.

Search Giant Google Unveils Chrome OS

Google today announced the much awaited launch of its Chrome OS, targeted to netbooks Chrome OS takes users directly to a browser & takes 10 seconds to start up.
Chrome OS is basically an operating system based around the Google Chrome web browser. It’s designed to surf the web and run web apps rather than native apps although users will be able to run some web apps such as Google Docs even when there’s no Internet connection available.The lightweight Chrome runs on both x86 (Intel Pentium and Atom Family) as well as ARM chip architectures, which means it can support desktops and laptops.
Sundar Pichai, Vice President for product management at Google Inc said, “Chrome OS, currently in test version, is essentially a free software but it will only be available with the new device being shipped by our partners like Samsung & Acer. We are working with multiple OEMs to bring number of netbooks to market next year”
Pankaj Arora, MD of Protiviti Consulting, said “Google Chrome is bound to bring down PC prices, given that it will be open source and will not have associated licensing fees but it will be interesting to watch how easy it will be for Google to convince manufacturers to move away from Microsoft and produce Chrome OS netbooks”
Microsoft controls over 90% of the world’s market and 98% of India’s operating system market.
Tech analysts feel that Chrome OS, which is aimed at netbooks, might lose out if tablet PCs swamp netbook market.
